Today, Nintendo held a special Nintendo Direct focusing on more information on the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Director Masahiro Sakurai flew through quite a few announcements from new fighters, stages, assist trophies & more. I’m going to try and break this down by category. For anyone who hasn’t watched it, spoilers are contained below.

New Fighters

Simon Belmont

Sakurai started with the beloved killer of the supernatural Simon Belmont from the series Castlevania. The character uses his iconic chain-whip weapon giving him a long reach but leaving himself open to attacks at the same time. This wouldn’t be the only thing from the Castlevania series announced, but we’ll get to those later.

King K. Rool

Donkey Kong’s long-standing nemesis and fan favorite King K. Rool finally joins the roster in Smash Ultimate. Nintendo decided to have a little fun today, faking everyone out with King Dedede doing his best impersonation of the Crockadile King before finally showing the character off.

Echo Fighters

Richter Belmont

Richter Belmont from Castlevania also appeared today as an Echo Fighter of Simon. The two have the same move set similar to other echo fighters with what seems like slight changes to weight, speed & strength.

Chrom

Adding to the already large list of character representing the Fire Emblem series, another fan favorite Chrom in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He appears to be a slightly weaker but faster echo of Ike. I could see this one quickly rising up the ranks of the competitive scene with a great overall move set as long as he’s not too much weaker than Ike.

Dark Samus

The last echo fighter shown today was Dark Samus. As his name implies this echo is of everyone’s favorite bounty hunter Samus Aran. It was hard to tell too many differences between the characters from the video besides animations but looks like a fun alternative.

Assist Trophies

Sakurai dashed a couple of peoples dreams announcing several new Assist Trophies, taking them off the table as possible fighter inclusions this time around. Zero, Knuckles & Shovel Knight round out the list as my personal favorites for inclusion in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The full list of announced Assist Trophies is below.

Stages

Sakurai announced that there will be several customization options for stages with larger Battlefield options as well as Omega options like in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Super Smash Bros. for 3DS. With these included the list of stages balloons to over 300 for the upcoming game. They also detailed options for turning off Feild Hazards for all versions of the stages and options to have the stage change mid-battle. Dracula’s Castle will also appear as a stage with over 30 pieces of music and multiple enemies from the game.
